The Material Development and Training Unit (MDTU) of the BESP cooperates with the National Institute of Education (NIE) and the National Colleges of Education (NcoE). The unit started off by supporting the development of the Primary Teacher Education Course (PPTE) which was endorsed as the common curriculum for Primary Teacher Education. Within this curriculum, the MDTU developed all training material for the language subjects, i.e. • Sinhala as the Mother Tongue • Tamil as the Mother Tongue • Sinhala as a Second National Language • Tamil as a Second National Language, and • English. |

|
The promotion of the language subjects is given priority in the light of the peace process in Sri Lanka. It is a declared aim of the education system that all children learn both National languages, i.e. Sinhala and Tamil. English is not only an important link language, but also a requirement for many employment opportunities. |

The MDTU played an active role in the support of the Vanni Education Rehabilitation Programme. It assisted in developing training course materials for teachers to promote slow learning children and training courses for English teachers. The unit is presently manned with 5 language specialists (one for each of the language subjects), 2 coordinators for Initial and Continuing Teacher Education one desktop publisher and supportive staff. |
