The Material Development and Training Unit (MDTU) of the BESP cooperates with the National Institute of Education (NIE) and the National Colleges of Education (NcoE). The unit started off by supporting the development of the Primary Teacher Education Course (PPTE) which was endorsed as the common curriculum for Primary Teacher Education. Within this curriculum, the MDTU developed all training materials that were introduced in one-week training courses to the teacher educators in the National Colleges of Education.

Initial Teacher Education in Sri Lanka comprises of a year of practical teaching in a school, the so-called Internship year. During this year, prospective teachers are supervised and guided by the teachers of their Internship school one of whom is appointed their mentor. Aiming at improved effectiveness of the Internship year, the MDTU embarked on the development of a training programme for these mentors.
