Training Programme

a. Training of Counsellors
Up to now, 65 Counsellor have been trained in two batches at the Shanthiham Training Centre in collaboration of the Extra Mural Unit of University of Jaffna. The third batch of 38 Counsellors is under training. The main material used for the training is “Child Mental Health”. The first batch of counsellors was given advanced training in Narrative Exposure Therapy by a team from VIVO headed by Dr. Elizabeth Schauer.

  b. Training of Befrienders
The trained Counsellors and Shanthiham resource persons are used as the trainers of Befrienders. Up to now 661 Befrienders at divisional level in 39 divisions of 12 education zones in Tamil medium have been trained. The training for the balance 23 divisions (Tamil Medium) and 14 Sinhala medium are planned to be completed before phasing out in May 2005. “Joyful Living” manual has been used for the training.
